I’m a big fan of purging and getting rid of things that no longer serve me. Spring always feels like the perfect time to go through things, to make space, to declutter-It’s so freeing!
Have you ever felt a bit overwhelmed or anxious when you see things pile up? Unopened mail, dishes, unorganized vanity, and spilling over drawers? MEEE TOO! There’s been several studies that correlate messiness and clutter with stress, especially in women. Rifling through drawers, cabinets, and closets to find exactly what you’re looking for can create feelings of anxiousness. Like any of us need more stress!
And Stress can wreak havoc on your skin. It’s a vicious cycle because if you’re stressed your skin doesn’t look its best which can stress you out and so the cycle continues.
So let’s declutter and de-stress together?!
Think of it as a use it or lose it way of life, a minimalistic approach if you will.
Here’s how to put it in action. Spend time going through each room of your home, sifting through drawers, closets, bookshelves, cabinets and ask yourself these 3 things.
Have I used it in the last 6 months?
Is it sentimental?
Do I REALLY need it?
As you’re going through things, if you’ve answered “no” to the above questions, add them to toss or recycle, sell, or donate piles!
Sidebar-If you’ve been holding on to those pants or a dress that you keep telling yourself you’re going to lose weight or get back into shape so you can squeeze into them again, unless you’re REALLY going to do it, let them go. You’ve got enough pressures and stress in your life, don’t keep torturing yourself too. If you’re healthy, that’s all that matters!
Ok, now back to the use it or lose it technique… Go through everything and make quick decisions..your gut typically responds first if you’re listening to it.
Use your best judgement to decide what should go in each pile. Once you’re finished going through your home, take your donate pile to your favorite donation center. Gather up things that need to be recycled and toss the things that need to be trashed. Have a yard sale or sell online. Not only will you declutter, you’ll feel good about donating and making some extra cash.
Trust me your house will be less cluttered, feel more spacious and studies show that clutter creates stress (who needs more of that?) so if it doesn’t serve you set it free!
